Day 2: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, set off for southwestern Uganda, where Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects a significant population of endangered mountain gorillas. Along the way, stop at the Equator for photographs and enjoy the opportunity to stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
Continue through Uganda’s picturesque countryside, passing traditional homesteads, cattle ranches, and rolling green hills. You will stop for lunch in Mbarara before proceeding through the scenic highlands toward Bwindi.
Upon arrival, check in at Bweza Gorilla Lodge and relax in the peaceful forest surroundings. Meanwhile, your guide will help you prepare for the following day’s mountain gorilla trekking experience.
Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Accommodation: Bweza Gorilla Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 3: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Begin your day with an early breakfast before travelling to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. During the briefing, learn about gorilla conservation, trekking guidelines, and responsible wildlife viewing.
Afterwards, enter Bwindi’s dense tropical forest with your ranger guide and begin searching for a habituated mountain gorilla family. The trek may take several hours because the gorillas move freely through the forest, and the steep, sometimes muddy terrain can make the hike challenging.
Once you locate the family, spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas as they feed, groom, play, and interact. Keep your camera ready while maintaining the required distance and following your ranger’s instructions.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Later, you may choose an optional community walk to learn about local traditions and everyday life near the forest. Alternatively, spend the afternoon unwinding at the lodge before dinner.
Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Accommodation: Bweza Gorilla Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha
After breakfast, depart Bwindi and travel toward Queen Elizabeth National Park through the scenic Ishasha sector. This part of southwestern Uganda is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which sometimes rest on the branches of large fig trees.
As you explore the area, your guide will help you search for lions and other wildlife. Although sightings depend on natural conditions, the journey offers beautiful views of the surrounding plains and diverse landscapes.
Continue toward your lodge, stopping for lunch along the way. As the forested highlands gradually give way to open savannah, watch for wildlife and enjoy the changing scenery.
Upon arrival at Pumba Safari Cottages, check in and relax for the evening. Prepare for the next day’s chimpanzee trekking adventure and boat cruise.
Main Destination: Ishasha Sector and Queen Elizabeth National Park
Accommodation: Pumba Safari Cottages
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
Start the day with an early breakfast before heading to Kyambura Gorge for chimpanzee trekking. Often called the “Valley of the Apes,” this lush gorge cuts through Queen Elizabeth National Park’s savannah landscape and provides a habitat for chimpanzees and other primates.
Accompanied by experienced guides, venture into the forest to search for chimpanzees. Along the way, listen for their calls, observe the forest vegetation, and learn about their feeding habits and social behaviour. You may also encounter other wildlife, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and a short rest. Later, head to the Kazinga Channel for a memorable boat cruise along the waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George.
During the cruise, look for hippos gathering in the water, Nile crocodiles resting along the banks, and elephants and buffaloes visiting the shoreline. In addition, watch for kingfishers, pelicans, fish eagles, and other water birds.
As the boat moves along the channel, enjoy excellent photography opportunities and a closer look at one of Uganda’s richest wildlife habitats. Return to Pumba Safari Cottages for dinner and an overnight stay.
Main Destination: Kyambura Gorge and Kazinga Channel
Accommodation: Pumba Safari Cottages
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 6: Morning Game Drive and Transfer to Entebbe
Rise early for breakfast before setting out on a morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Explore the open savannah with your guide as you search for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife. With luck, you may also spot lions or other predators.
After the game drive, begin your return journey to Entebbe. Along the way, enjoy the countryside views and stop for lunch before continuing to Entebbe International Airport or your hotel, depending on your onward travel arrangements.
Your 6-day Uganda safari with chimpanzee and gorilla trekking concludes with lasting memories of Uganda’s mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, savannah wildlife, and spectacular landscapes.
