From Uganda’s mystical Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to endangered mountain gorillas, to Rwanda’s pristine Nyungwe rainforest canopy walks, experience the magic of ancient woodlands. Venture into Kenya’s iconic Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s legendary Serengeti, where endless golden savannahs stretch beyond the horizon, teeming with the Big Five and the spectacular Great Migration.
Uganda: $800 per person for foreign non-residents at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Rwanda: $1,500 per person for foreign visitors at Volcanoes National Park.
Permits must be booked well in advance, especially during peak seasons (June-September and December-January).
The minimum age is 15 years old in both Uganda and Rwanda. This restriction exists because younger children may find the trek physically challenging and might inadvertently disturb the gorillas or carry diseases that could affect these vulnerable primates.
Moderate fitness is required. Treks can last 2-8 hours through dense forest, steep terrain, and muddy paths. You’ll hike at altitudes of 2,000-4,000 meters. Regular walking or light jogging preparation is recommended. Porters are available to carry bags and assist if needed.
Dry seasons: June-September and December-February offer easier hiking conditions with less mud and rain.
Wet seasons: March-May and October-November have fewer crowds and lush scenery, but trails are more challenging. Gorillas can be tracked year-round as they don’t migrate.
Essential items:
Kenya: June-October (dry season, Great Migration in Maasai Mara July-October) and January-March for fewer crowds.
Uganda: June-September and December-February offer drier conditions for easier wildlife viewing.
Rwanda: June-September provides the best weather for gorilla trekking, though safaris are possible year-round.
Kenya offers excellent combinations with coastal destinations like Diani Beach, Malindi, or Lamu after safari. Uganda and Rwanda are landlocked but can be combined with Zanzibar (Tanzania) or Kenya’s coast. Experiya Tour Company offers seamless beach-safari packages with domestic flights.
