DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1: Travel from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your adventure begins in Kigali, where your Experiya Tour Company driver-guide will meet you and welcome you aboard your safari vehicle. After a short introduction, set off for southwestern Uganda. As you leave the city behind, enjoy the beautiful countryside, rolling hills, terraced farms, and traditional homesteads that make this region so special.
Along the way, you may stop at scenic viewpoints to take photographs or enjoy refreshments, depending on your schedule. You will then cross into Uganda after completing the necessary immigration formalities.
From there, continue towards the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This remarkable rainforest shelters endangered mountain gorillas and offers some of Uganda’s most memorable gorilla trekking experiences. As you approach the highlands, take in the lush vegetation and striking mountain scenery.
Upon arrival, check in at Icumbi Gorilla Lodge and settle into your room. You can spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Meanwhile, your guide will brief you about the following day’s gorilla trek and explain what to pack for your forest adventure.
Finally, enjoy dinner at the lodge before retiring for the night. Get a good rest because tomorrow brings one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters.
Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Rushaga Sector
Accommodation: Icumbi Gorilla Lodge

DAY 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast at the lodge before heading to the Rushaga gorilla trekking briefing point. There, Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the trekking guidelines, safety precautions, and rules for observing mountain gorillas responsibly.
After the briefing, join your ranger guides and trackers as you enter Bwindi’s dense rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trail may lead you up steep slopes, across uneven ground, and through muddy or slippery sections. However, your guides will help you navigate the terrain while sharing interesting facts about the forest’s plants and wildlife.
The trek may take several hours because mountain gorillas move freely through their natural habitat. Nevertheless, the excitement builds with every step. When you finally encounter your assigned gorilla family, you will have one unforgettable hour to observe these remarkable primates as they feed, groom, rest, and interact with one another.
During this special moment, follow your ranger’s instructions and maintain the required viewing distance. You may take photographs without disturbing the gorillas, allowing you to capture memories of this rare wildlife encounter.
Afterwards, return to the starting point, where you may receive a gorilla trekking certificate. Walking sticks can help you negotiate the forest trails, while a locally hired porter can carry your bag and assist you along the way for an additional fee.
In the afternoon, continue your adventure with a guided Batwa cultural experience, subject to the trekking schedule and the availability of the community visit. Meet Batwa community members and discover their traditional knowledge, music, dance, storytelling, and historical connection to the forest.
As you listen to their stories, you will gain a deeper appreciation of the Batwa people’s heritage and the changes they have experienced since leaving their ancestral forest homes. This encounter offers more than a cultural performance; it provides an opportunity to learn about the people whose history remains closely connected to Bwindi’s natural environment.
After this enriching experience, return to Icumbi Gorilla Lodge. Enjoy dinner, relax in the cool highland atmosphere, and reflect on a day filled with wildlife and cultural discovery.
Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Rushaga Sector

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

DAY 3: Return to Kigali and Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before checking out and beginning your return journey to Kigali with your driver-guide. As you travel through southwestern Uganda and Rwanda, admire the rolling hills and beautiful countryside. You will also pass rural communities where daily life offers glimpses into the region’s traditions and way of life.
Upon arrival in Kigali, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important place of remembrance dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Walk through the exhibitions to learn about Rwanda’s history, the devastating impact of the genocide, and the country’s ongoing efforts towards remembrance, reconciliation, and healing.
The visit offers a meaningful opportunity to understand Rwanda beyond its landscapes and wildlife. It also provides important historical context for the country’s journey towards peace and recovery.
Afterwards, enjoy lunch at the Museum Café or another suitable restaurant, depending on your arrival time and schedule. If time allows, explore parts of Kigali, browse local markets, or shop for souvenirs before heading to the airport.
Finally, your driver-guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. As your safari comes to an end, take home lasting memories of Uganda’s mountain gorillas, the Batwa community’s rich cultural heritage, and the scenic beauty of the Gorilla Highlands.
Important: The Kigali Genocide Memorial visit, lunch, and optional city sightseeing depend on border-crossing times, road conditions, the memorial’s opening arrangements, and your flight schedule. To enjoy a more relaxed final day, choose a departure flight that allows sufficient time for the journey and planned activities.
