The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), popularly known as the Entebbe Zoo, is one of the top attractions to explore during your stay in Entebbe or Kampala. For both residents and international visitors, UWEC offers a rare opportunity to see and learn about many of Africa’s iconic wildlife species in one accessible location without the need to travel to remote national parks.
Surprisingly, a visit to UWEC can feel even more rewarding than a traditional safari. The Centre is affordable, easy to reach, and offers incredibly close encounters with animals, particularly for visitors who choose the Behind the Scenes experiences guided by professional caretakers.
Set on more than 72 acres, UWEC features a scenic network of trails leading through animal habitats and a stretch of natural forest. Its position on the shores of Lake Victoria makes it one of the most picturesque and educational wildlife facilities in East Africa. Beyond tourism, UWEC plays a vital role in wildlife rescue, conservation education, veterinary care, and the breeding of endangered species.
UWEC began in 1950 as a sanctuary for injured, orphaned, or rescued animals. Founded by the colonial government with support from the Wildlife Conservation Society, it later transitioned into a traditional zoo during the 1960s, even hosting exotic species like tigers and bears.
Political instability in the 1970s and 80s led to a decline in infrastructure and management. Government intervention and a study conducted by the New York Zoological Society sparked its transformation, shifting the zoo’s purpose toward conservation and education.
In May 1994, it officially became the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre under the Ministry of Tourism. Increased funding, improved management, and land expansion helped UWEC grow into one of Africa’s most respected conservation and wildlife education institutions.
UWEC is renowned for its rich biodiversity and proximity to Uganda’s major urban centers. Visitors can encounter a wide range of species including giraffes, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, chimpanzees, baboons, various monkey species, and an impressive collection of birds such as the Shoebill Stork, ostriches, egrets, crested cranes, parrots, and peacocks. Reptiles such as crocodiles, snakes, pythons, and tortoises are also present, along with antelopes like impala, kob, eland, topi, and waterbuck.
More than 120 bird species and 23 primate species can be seen within the Centre, along with diverse flora, butterflies, and free-roaming wildlife that create a natural atmosphere. The Centre attracts school groups, families, and travelers seeking an educational yet enjoyable day out. Entrance fees directly support wildlife conservation and animal care.
The Behind the Scenes experience is among the most exciting activities at UWEC. It offers visitors an intimate encounter with animals under the guidance of experienced caretakers. Participants learn individual animal stories, observe daily care routines, and understand how rescued wildlife is rehabilitated.
The experience is available in three categories: Keeper’s Guided Tour, Vet for the Day, and Keeper for the Day. Each option costs $70 per person and offers a close-up encounter that few traditional safaris can match.
Visitors may explore UWEC independently, but hiring a guide enhances the experience significantly. A guided tour lasts about half a day and provides detailed insights into animal behavior, habitats, and conservation efforts. Guides typically charge around $10 and are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing UWEC’s mission.
UWEC also offers chimpanzee close-up experiences at an extra fee. Uganda is home to thousands of chimpanzees, yet their populations remain vulnerable. This guided interaction allows visitors to feed chimpanzees, observe their social behavior, play with young individuals, and support the habituation of newly rescued chimps.
Visitors undergo mandatory vaccinations and health checks to prevent disease transmission. Many chimps rehabilitated at UWEC later join the sanctuary on Ngamba Island for further care.
UWEC offers volunteering opportunities lasting from one week to several months, attracting participants from around the world. Volunteers work closely with various animals, including rhinos, primates, birds, and reptiles. Activities include feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, participating in visitor education, assisting in research, and helping with conservation programs.
Volunteers stay onsite near Lake Victoria and must be vaccinated for yellow fever, polio, meningitis, tetanus, measles, and hepatitis A and B, with a tuberculosis screening required. The program costs $1,500 and covers meals, accommodation, airport transfers, and excursions. Participants receive a certificate upon completion.
UWEC features more than 1 km of natural forest along Lake Victoria’s shoreline, perfect for nature walks. This serene trail offers sightings of butterflies, chameleons, small primates, medicinal plants, and abundant birdlife. With more than 100 bird species recorded, the forest trail is a paradise for birdwatchers, and local guides are available to provide ecological interpretation.
Families visiting UWEC will enjoy several child-friendly activities. Children can ride donkeys or camels for a small fee, while adults may take boat rides along the shores of Lake Victoria—an excellent opportunity for spotting water birds and enjoying the scenery.
A lakeside restaurant provides a relaxing space for visitors to enjoy a meal after the tour. Vervet monkeys roam freely around the area, and visitors are advised not to feed them.
The easiest way to support the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is by visiting. Entrance fees fund animal care, staff salaries, and wildlife rescue operations. Additional ways to contribute include sponsoring an animal through the Animal Parents Program, joining membership packages, or donating through UWEC’s official platform.
Non-resident adults pay $15, while non-resident children pay $10. Ugandan adults are charged 10,000 UGX, and Ugandan children pay 5,000 UGX. Video recording costs 10,000 UGX, and parking is 2,000 UGX. Guided tours and special experiences have separate charges.
UWEC opens daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. To fully enjoy the Centre and take part in optional experiences, arriving before 4:00 PM is recommended.
