Rhino trekking in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park offers an unforgettable wildlife adventure. Once extinct in the park, rhinos have now been successfully reintroduced, allowing travelers to witness these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. As Rwanda’s largest wetland reserve and only savannah park, Akagera is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including the Big Five elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, and lion.
At Experiya Tour Company, we provide guided rhino trekking safaris that allow visitors to engage with conservation efforts while enjoying the thrill of seeing rhinos up close. This experience combines adventure, education, and wildlife photography for an extraordinary safari experience.
In the late 1970s, Akagera National Park was home to over 50 rhinos thriving across its savannah landscapes. Unfortunately, during and after the Rwanda civil war, returning refugees hunted these rhinos, clearing the population entirely. Additionally, deforestation and livestock grazing further degraded the park’s ecosystem.
To restore the park, the Rwanda Development Board partnered with African Parks to form the Akagera Management Company in 2010. Through extensive conservation efforts, Akagera regained its former glory, including the successful reintroduction of rhinos.
In May 2017, 18 black eastern rhinos were translocated from South Africa to Akagera. This marked a major milestone in the park’s conservation history, restoring rhinos after a decade-long absence. By 2019, five additional rhinos—three females and two males named Jasiri, Jasmina, Manny, Mandela, and Olmoti—were introduced from European zoos through the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
Today, Akagera hosts 20 black rhinos and 30 white rhinos, alongside over 100 elephants, 15 lions, and more than 500 bird species, making it one of Rwanda’s premier wildlife destinations.
Rhino trekking in Akagera National Park is a first-of-its-kind walking safari, offering visitors the chance to observe rhinos up close. Guests accompany experienced rhino trackers who monitor rhino behavior, health, and habitats. The activity also allows for excellent wildlife photography opportunities.
The trekking routes vary depending on the rhino species. White rhinos, grazers by nature, often frequent the Kilala Plains in the northern park. Their cousins, the browsing black rhinos, stick mostly to the southern acacia-covered sections. For the best experience, visit early in the morning when the rhinos graze near riverbanks, or watch them refresh themselves at designated water springs during the hot afternoons. Rhino trekking may require venturing off official game drive tracks, adding an adventurous element to the safari.
Akagera National Park is not only about rhinos. As Rwanda’s only savannah park, it offers a range of wildlife experiences, including safari game drives across vast savannahs, boat trips on Lake Ihema, fishing adventures, guided nature walks, camping experiences, and community cultural interactions.
Visitors may also combine rhino trekking with other Rwanda adventures, such as gorilla trekking or golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park, mountain hikes on Bisoke or Karisimbi, and chimpanzee trekking or canopy walks in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Akagera is a bird-watcher’s paradise, with over 500 bird species, including papyrus gonoleks, grey crowned cranes, giant kingfishers, squacco herons, African darters, and fish eagles.
Akagera National Park can be visited year-round, but timing affects the wildlife experience. The dry season from June to September is ideal for game drives as wildlife congregates around waterholes and the shorter grass allows for better visibility. The long rainy season from March to May brings cooler temperatures and lush scenery, though roads may be muddy, and warm clothing is recommended for chilly nights. The short wet season from October to November is excellent for bird-watching, as migratory species from Europe and Eastern Asia arrive.
Akagera National Park is easily accessible from Kigali. By road, it is approximately 110 km, or a 2-hour drive from the capital. Alternatively, travelers can charter a helicopter from Kigali for a faster and scenic transfer.
Experiya Tour Company ensures that your rhino trekking adventure in Akagera National Park is seamless, safe, and unforgettable. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, photographer, or adventurer, rhino trekking offers a rare chance to witness one of Africa’s most iconic species while supporting vital conservation efforts.
