The thrilling Ngezi nature walk takes you to the beautiful Ngezi Crater Lake at the foot of Mount Bisoke in Volcanoes National Park (160 square kilometers), located in northwestern Rwanda. This guided 4-hour hike rewards you with breathtaking views of bird species, playful monkeys, elusive mammals such as elephants, the sparkling crater lake, and other majestic volcanoes. However, the Ngezi nature walk demands physical fitness as you traverse rugged terrain, climbing to altitudes ranging from 2,800 to 2,900 meters above sea level.
Fortunately, the Ngezi nature walk in Volcanoes National Park can be enjoyed throughout the year. However, the dry season is the most favorable time to visit, as hiking trails remain dry and safe. This season occurs twice a year, from December to February and again from June to September, with July and August being the driest months. During these periods, temperatures are warmer, and chances of rainfall are minimal, making the trek more comfortable.
On the other hand, the rainy season creates damp and slippery conditions along the forest trails, making the hike more challenging. Heavy rains fall mainly from March to May and from October to November, with April and May being the wettest months. Nevertheless, the rainy season transforms the forest into a lush paradise, offering vibrant vegetation and attracting a wide variety of bird species, which is ideal for photography enthusiasts.
To access Volcanoes National Park for the Ngezi nature walk, you start at the park headquarters in Kinigi, about 110 kilometers northwest of Kigali. The scenic drive takes between 2.5 to 3 hours. While you can use public transport, traveling by private vehicle provides greater comfort and flexibility.
Alternatively, you can opt for a faster air transfer. Helicopter flights from Kigali International Airport to Musanze airstrip take only 30 minutes and offer incredible aerial views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and volcanic landscapes. From Musanze, it is a short drive to the park for the start of your nature walk.
