Gorilla Permit Prices

Uganda currently charges $800 per person for foreign non-residents participating in gorilla trekking. Foreign residents pay $700, while East African citizens pay UGX 300,000.

These fees include park entrance, ranger guide services, security, and direct contributions toward mountain gorilla conservation and local community development.

The permit does not cover accommodation, transportation, meals, porter services, personal expenses, or travel insurance.

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking permit currently costs $1,500 per person for foreign visitors. Although Rwanda charges a higher permit fee, many travelers appreciate the shorter travel time from Kigali International Airport to Volcanoes National Park.

Can You Pay for Gorilla Permits in Installments?

Yes. Both Uganda and Rwanda allow installment payments under specific conditions.

Generally, installment payments apply when you reserve your permit at least 90 days before your trekking date. However, the remaining balance must be paid before the final payment deadline established by the wildlife authority.

Although installment payments provide flexibility, paying the full amount as early as possible reduces the risk of complications and guarantees your reservation.

Are Discounted Gorilla Permits Available?

Promotional gorilla permit discounts are no longer common. However, Uganda continues to offer reduced permit rates for foreign residents and East African citizens throughout the year.

Rwanda occasionally provides discounted permits during selected low seasons. For example, qualifying visitors may purchase permits at $1,050 if they spend at least two nights in either Akagera National Park or Nyungwe National Park before trekking gorillas.

These special offers remain subject to government policies and may change without prior notice.

When Should You Book Your Gorilla Permit?

Booking your gorilla permit early gives you the best chance of obtaining your preferred trekking date.

Experts recommend making reservations at least six months in advance. If you plan to travel during June, July, August, September, December, or January, booking nine to twelve months ahead is even better because demand is exceptionally high.

Early booking also gives you more accommodation choices, allowing you to stay closer to your assigned trekking sector.

Can Gorilla Permits Be Rescheduled?

Yes. Both Uganda and Rwanda allow permit rescheduling under certain circumstances.

If unexpected events affect your travel plans, you must submit a formal request explaining your situation. Supporting documents may also be required depending on the reason for the change.

In Uganda, permit holders can normally reschedule twice without additional charges, provided availability exists. Further changes require approval from the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Rwanda also allows permit rescheduling, although additional fees usually apply.
