The highlight of any visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is undeniably the mountain gorillas. Home to around 400 of these majestic primates, Bwindi offers travelers the extraordinary chance to trek and observe gorillas in their natural habitat. These gentle giants are spread across different areas of the park, known as gorilla trekking sectors. So, how many tracking locations does Bwindi have?
Bwindi has four main gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Each sector presents unique experiences, landscapes, and habituated gorilla families. Let’s explore each one.
Located in the northern part of Bwindi, Buhoma is the oldest and most established gorilla trekking area. In fact, the first habituated gorilla family was introduced here in 1993. Today, several habituated families, including Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Mubare, can be tracked in this sector.

Situated in the eastern part of the park, Ruhija sits at an elevation of around 2,500 meters above sea level. This sector is home to four habituated gorilla families: Mukiza, Bitukura, Kyanguliro, and Oruzongo. Besides gorilla trekking, Ruhija is unique because visitors may also encounter elephants and other wildlife.
The sector’s highest point, Rwamunyonyi, reaches 2,607 meters and requires a hike to access, rewarding trekkers with breathtaking views of the Virunga ranges.

Nkuringo lies in the southern part of Bwindi, adjacent to Rushaga. Its steep terrain makes trekking here more challenging, but the experience is incredibly rewarding. The first habituated gorilla family, the Nkuringo group, was introduced here, followed by the Bushaho and Christmas families.
Trekking in Nkuringo also offers spectacular views of the Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Rushaga, also located in southern Bwindi, borders Nkuringo and is one of the park’s most popular trekking sectors. It hosts ten habituated gorilla families, such as Bweza, Mucunguzi, Nshongi, Kahungye, Bikingi, and Mishaya.
Rushaga is not only ideal for trekking but also serves as a hub for gorilla habituation and research, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into conservation efforts.
