Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda takes place in several destinations, each offering unique experiences. The most popular locations include:
Among these, Kibale National Park stands out as the best destination for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda.
In Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is the only chimpanzee trekking destination. Located in the southwestern region, Nyungwe is home to two habituated chimpanzee communities: one in Uwinka and the other in Cyamudongo. Permits should always be booked in advance since they sell out quickly, especially during the peak travel season (June–September).
In Uganda, you can book permits through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or with the assistance of a trusted tour operator such as Experiya Tour Company. We will check availability, reserve, and purchase the permits on your behalf. You only need to provide your preferred trekking dates, passport details, and the number of permits required.
In Rwanda, permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and can also be booked through Experiya Tour Company. To secure your trek, it is advisable to book at least six months in advance, particularly during high season.
These restrictions ensure safety, discipline during treks, and protection of the chimpanzees.

Your trek begins early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. Rangers explain the rules and assign groups of 6–8 trekkers to one habituated chimpanzee family. An armed ranger and guide accompany each group.
The trek can take 1–5 hours depending on the chimpanzees’ location. Once found, you spend one magical hour observing their behavior, interactions, and unique personalities.
Uganda also offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale, where you can spend a full day with researchers and semi-habituated chimps. The permit costs $350 (Foreign Non-Residents), $300 (Foreign Residents), and UGX 300,000 (EAC Citizens).
