In the heart of Kigali lies a transformed treasure Nyandungu Eco-Park. Once a degraded wetland, this area has been reborn as a peaceful oasis where nature and city life meet. With its forests, walking trails, ponds, and cultural gardens, the park offers a calm retreat for both locals and visitors. It stands as a shining example of Rwanda’s vision for green and sustainable cities.
For many years, the Nyandungu wetland suffered from sand mining, farming, and grazing. In 2016, Rwanda’s government launched an ambitious restoration project to heal the land. More than 17,000 trees were planted, wetland ponds were reshaped to hold and clean water, and native plants were reintroduced to revive the ecosystem.
Today, Nyandungu Eco-Park spans 121 hectares of restored green space that blends ecology, culture, and recreation a place where urban conservation truly comes alive.
A walk through Nyandungu feels like stepping into another world. Long trails wind through cool forests and vibrant gardens. Birds sing from the trees, while butterflies dance over flowering paths. The air feels fresher and lighter compared to the bustling city nearby.
One of the highlights is the Medicinal Garden, which showcases traditional Rwandan healing plants. Each plant is labeled, offering visitors the chance to learn about their uses. Nearby lies the Pope’s Garden, a peaceful space built to honor Pope John Paul II’s 1990 visit a perfect spot to sit, reflect, or simply enjoy the stillness.
Bird lovers will also find the park irresistible. With over 100 bird species recorded, from bright weavers to grey parrots, the diversity is impressive. The artificial ponds, including Pond Muhazi and Pond Ihema, support aquatic life and provide stunning backdrops for photography.
The park is designed for both movement and relaxation. More than 10 kilometers of walking and biking trails weave through the landscape, inviting visitors to explore at their own pace. Bicycles are available for rent, while picnic areas, shaded benches, and resting spots make it easy to pause and take in the views.
When it’s time to recharge, a restaurant inside the park offers delicious local dishes, refreshing drinks, and light snacks making it convenient to spend a full day surrounded by nature.
Nyandungu Eco-Park represents more than recreation; it is a living model of urban conservation. Its forests and ponds naturally cool the city, filter the air, and reduce flooding risks. The project also created more than 4,000 green jobs, giving local communities new skills and opportunities while ensuring the park’s long-term care.
In addition, the park serves as an outdoor classroom. Schools and universities regularly bring students here to study plants, water systems, and ecosystem restoration. Informative signs placed along the trails provide fascinating insights, turning each visit into a learning experience.
Nyandungu Eco-Park is conveniently located along KK 3 Road, close to Kigali International Airport. It opens daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and entry is free for everyone.
For the best birdwatching, arrive early in the morning. For breathtaking views, come in the late afternoon when the golden light reflects beautifully on the ponds. Comfortable walking shoes and a bottle of water will make your visit even more enjoyable.
Nyandungu Eco-Park proves that damaged land can flourish again. It offers Kigali a place to breathe a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and calm. Whether you are strolling through the forest, spotting colorful birds, or enjoying a quiet lunch, the park invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature. It is truly one of Kigali’s finest examples of green growth and peaceful living.
