Itinerary Description
06:00 AM – Airport Pickup & Drive to Akagera
Your day begins with a warm Rwandan welcome as our guide meets you at Kigali International Airport (or your hotel). With friendly smiles and hot coffee (if you’d like), we begin our journey eastward towards Akagera. The drive is beautiful rolling hills, traditional villages, and the soft morning light casting a golden hue across the countryside.
As the sun rises, anticipation builds. This isn’t just travel it’s the beginning of a story.
08:30 AM – Arrive at Akagera National Park
We arrive at the park’s southern gate, where the savannah opens up before you. Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s most diverse ecosystems sprawling grasslands, acacia woodlands, wetlands, and lakes. After a quick briefing, we begin our adventure.
09:00 AM – Game Drive: Into the Wild
Now the real journey begins. With a professional safari guide and a 4×4 vehicle, we dive deep into the park in search of wildlife. The drive is unhurried, allowing you to fully take in the natural beauty and tune into the sounds of the wild.
Keep your eyes peeled elephants might appear from the trees, herds of zebra and impala graze in the open fields, and if luck is on our side, we may spot a lion resting in the shade or a rhino grazing quietly near the road. Giraffes often stand tall along the ridgelines, and hippos can be seen wallowing in the lakes.
It’s not just about the animals, though it’s about the moments in between. The stillness. The birdsong. The sun painting the sky.
12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch in the Bush
Midday, we pause at a scenic picnic spot overlooking Lake Ihema or one of the park’s tranquil hideouts. Enjoy a fresh packed lunch, cool drinks, and the peaceful ambiance of the wilderness. It’s a moment to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the simple joy of being surrounded by nature.
01:30 PM – Afternoon Game Viewing
After lunch, we continue our drive, exploring new parts of the park. This time, we may focus more on the northern circuit where wildlife is often more concentrated. The open plains here are breathtaking, and the changing light adds a golden glow to the landscape.
Bird lovers will be delighted Akagera is home to over 500 species, including the rare shoebill stork, African fish eagle, and various kingfishers and herons.
Throughout the drive, your guide will share stories and facts about the animals, the park’s conservation efforts, and how Akagera came back from the brink to become one of Africa’s great success stories.
03:30 PM – Begin Journey Back to Kigali
As the afternoon wanes and the day’s last sightings settle into memory, we begin the drive back to Kigali. It’s quiet now fulfilled. The landscape outside your window feels different, more familiar somehow. You’ve been somewhere most never go. And it stays with you.
06:00 PM – Drop-off at Kigali Airport or Hotel
We return you to Kigali either back to your hotel for a well-earned rest or directly to the airport for your onward journey. Either way, you’ll leave with full memory cards, a soul touched by nature, and stories to tell for a lifetime.
